Foreign tourists and long-stay visitors in Bali are now required to follow a new hybrid visa extension system, effective immediately as of May 29, 2025. This significant change from Indonesia’s Directorate General of Immigration is impacting all visa holders who wish to extend their stay in the country.
Key Changes to Visa Extension Process
The updated process begins with online registration via the official immigration website at evisa.imigrasi.go.id. After registering online, applicants must then visit their nearest Immigration Office in person for biometric data collection and document verification.
This marks a shift from the fully digital system introduced in 2024, where most visa extensions could be processed entirely online. The reintroduction of in-person appointments is part of a move to tighten immigration control and prevent misuse of visa facilities.
What Tourists Need to Know
According to Acting Director General of Immigration Yuldi Yusman, the rule change is outlined in Circular Letter Number IMI-417.GR.01.01 Year 2025. The procedure applies to all extendable visa types, including the Visa on Arrival (VoA) and eVoA.
Here’s how the new system works:
-
Online Application: Start by visiting evisa.imigrasi.go.id, select “Extend My Visa”, and follow the instructions. The website supports English and works on both mobile and desktop devices. Keep your passport handy during this step.
-
In-Person Visit: After online registration, you’ll be called to the nearest Immigration Office within two working days for document verification and to provide biometrics.
-
Walk-Ins Still Allowed: If you can’t register online, walk-ins are permitted. You’ll need to fill out the same registration form at the office and will be called back within two working days.
Priority Service for Special Cases
A priority lane is now available for the elderly, people with disabilities, pregnant or breastfeeding women, and individuals in emergencies. These applicants can complete the full process—including registration and biometrics—in a single visit with help from immigration officers.
Why the Change?
Indonesia Immigration reports a 36.7% increase in immigration violations between January–April 2025 compared to the same period in 2024. In response, the new hybrid system aims to prevent abuse of visas and strengthen immigration control.
What to Prepare
Although extra documents are not explicitly required, immigration officers may ask questions about your stay, such as:
-
Your plans during your extended stay
-
Your accommodation details
-
Proof of onward travel
-
Proof of sufficient funds
Being ready with this information can help streamline the process.
Final Notes
For holidaymakers, the most suitable options remain the VoA and eVoA, each valid for 30 days and extendable once. The cost of the VoA is IDR 500,000.
As Indonesia tightens its immigration policies, more changes may come. Visitors planning extended stays are advised to follow the latest rules closely to avoid complications.
